Celeste Owens from Bailies Coffee Roasters shares her Colombian Geisha coffee review

Geisha feels a little bit like the unicorn of coffee varietals. Rare and exclusive, their flavour profile is exotic, exciting and surprising. Geisha’s are known for their tropical fruit flavours, light tea-like body, high sweetness and stone fruit acidity. All the right things happen on your tongue!

Bailies Coffee Roasters current Geisha comes from Andre Felipe Londono at his farm, Manatiales del Frontino. Being one of Colombia’s bigger and more progressive farms, they experiment with lots of interesting varieties (like Geisha) rather than the usual Castillo, which is standard for the Colombian Coffee Growers Federation. Because of a truckers strike in Colombia and shipment problems, the coffee didn’t arrive quite as we expected. So, while still having all the traits of a Geisha, the flavours aren’t quite as pronounced. But still incredibly delish!

My favourite way to drink coffee is as a black filter coffee, in particular V60. This Geisha is a real beauty as a V60.  I was immediately hit by the tropical aroma as I started brewing. The initial flavour is of delicate Jasmine and then finishes with tart, sweet mandarin flavour. (I’m Australian, that’s what we call tangerines!)

It’s the perfect coffee to knock the socks off my folks, who love their darkly roasted coffee.
